A Closer Look at AnteSpam Email Security Email Filtering
Who can use AnteSpam Email Security?
HiWAAY's AnteSpam Email Security is for businesses or individuals who own their domain name. Anyone with their own domain name can use AnteSpam Email Security. It is not set up to filter email for hiwaay.net addresses. HiWAAY includes free AnteSpam Email Security spam and virus filtering for customers with @hiwaay.net email addresses.
How does it work?
The email is passed through a filter before it gets to your email server or email account. The filter identifies spam and puts it into a folder on the AnteSpam Email Security server, where it is stored for your review for up to seven days before it's deleted. Virus infected mail are cleaned and also left available for later review.
How do I check email with AnteSpam Email Security?
You get your email just like you always have. AnteSpam Email Security is compatible with all email software. Since it's a gateway scanner, meaning it filters email before it reaches your mailbox, there is nothing to change in your email software. No new software or hardware is required to use AnteSpam Email Security. The filter is totally maintained on AnteSpam Email Security servers.
What does it do?
Experts have developed hundreds of rules used to identify spam. The spam filter compares your incoming mail to all those rules and keeps score. If the score is high enough for a particular email, AnteSpam Email Security grabs that email and holds it in a separate folder on the AnteSpam Email Security server. (See Sidelined Email below.)
Will AnteSpam Email Security work with my domain aliases?
AnteSpam Email Security includes full support for domain aliases and sub-domains at no extra charge.
Will AnteSpam Email Security work with my email server?
Yes it will. AnteSpam Email Security is compatible with all email servers.
My email isn't hosted with HiWAAY. Will AnteSpam Email Security work for me?
AnteSpam Email Security doesn't care where your email is hosted. It will work with any domain hosted anywhere in the world.
What happens to my email if my mail server is down?
It's a scary thought, but if your email server is down for any reason, AnteSpam Email Security will retain all your incoming email for up to 5 days. If during that time your server comes back up, AnteSpam Email Security will deliver any email it has been holding for you.
Can AnteSpam Email Security back up my email?
Yes it can with the addition of optional Email Backup service. Email Backup is an optional upgrade for AnteSpam Email Security. You must have AnteSpam to use Email Backup. Email Backup saves a copy of every email sent to your domain through AnteSpam for the backup period you purchased. You can purchase Email backup for 7 days, 14 days, 31 days, 62 days or 93 days. For example, if you purchased 31 days of Email Backup protection then every email sent to your domain through AnteSpam will be saved for 31 days. Saved email can be recovered using any web browser. As an optional add-on, Email Backup is priced per block of AnteSpam Email Security protection. For example, if you have 2 blocks of AnteSpam Email Security protection and you order Email Backup for 7 days you'll be charged for 2 blocks of Email Backup or $11.90 per month.
What email will the AnteSpam Email Security Email Backup service actually back up?
The Email Backup service will store copies of all the email sent to all the addresses on your domain for up to 93 days. The email must go through AnteSpam to be backed up. Local email sent from one local account to another on the same email server may not go through AnteSpam and so would not get backed up. Likewise, outgoing email doesn't go through AnteSpam and so would not be backed up.
How do I see email backed up by the AnteSpam Email Security Email Backup service?
All email backed up by the Email Backup service is stored in your Sidelined email and can be viewed and forwarded from there.
Are there security concerns when using AnteSpam Email Security?
Just as you do with other online services, you should protect your AnteSpam Email Security login password. If you're using a unsecured network like a public hot spot, then be sure to log into the AnteSpam Email Security secure server by going to https://www.antespam.com/. This will encrypt your login password.
Can anyone see my sidelined or backed up email?
Of course you can see any backed up or sidelined email for your own email address. Beyond that, your AnteSpam administrator (the person in your company who manages your company's AnteSpam Email Security setup) can also see any sidelined or backed up email. Generally this is not a problem, however we recommend you NOT enable email backup for any address that normally receives unencrypted secure or sensitive email.
Are there limitations to AnteSpam Email Security?
Even with a product as good as AnteSpam Email Security there are a couple of limitations.
- AnteSpam Email Security can't filter out 100% of spam or viruses. No spam or virus filter can. AnteSpam Email Security gets pretty close though. For the hiwaay.net domain which gets over 150 million emails every month, the amount of spam that leaks through is far less than .1%.
- AnteSpam Email Security can't filter outgoing email so it doesn't filter the email you send to other people.
- The Email Backup service can only backup incoming email that goes through the AnteSpam servers.
- The Email Backup service cannot backup outgoing email.
Do I have any controls with spam filtering?
AnteSpam Email Security includes some very powerful yet easy to use web-based tools for controlling the way you want AnteSpam Email Security to work for you. The tools are completely compatible with all operating systems and the latest versions of popular web browsers like Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari.
- The Control Panel - AnteSpam Email Security has a web-based control panel through which you can adjust the sensitivity to spam, update your account information and view sidelined emails. Basic AnteSpam Email Security gives you a single control panel for your controlling the filters for your domain. Advanced AnteSpam Email Security allows every email user in your domain to have his or her own control panel to control the filters for his or her account.
- Sidelined Email - AnteSpam Email Security includes a very powerful web-based interface to view and manage your sidelined email, if you want to. From sidelined email you can forward caught email to your mailbox or with a single mouse click add block or pass filters.
- The Block List - AnteSpam Email Security includes the option of building a list of email addresses you do not want to receive email from at any time. Mail from these addresses will go directly into the sidelined mail folder. Basic AnteSpam Email Security includes a block list for your entire domain. Advanced AnteSpam Email Security also includes block lists for each email address.
- The Pass List - AnteSpam Email Security includes the option of building a list of email addresses you do want to receive email from all the time. Mail from these addresses will be sent directly to your email account and be available as regular email. If you find a valid email in your sidelined mail, you can opt to have that email submitted for statistical analysis as a valid email to reduce the chances of it being caught again. Basic AnteSpam Email Security includes a pass list for your entire domain. Advanced AnteSpam Email Security also includes pass lists for each email address.
What about virus filtering?
When virus filtering is enabled, virus infected emails are removed without regard to thresholds or block/pass lists. AnteSpam Email Security uses a virus database that is updated often, sometimes several times a day, by experts from all over the world. Virus infected email is usually generated by the viral code itself. This means virus infected email is not legitimate email, but exists only to spread the virus. To protect your data from this common threat, any email or attachment matching a virus definition is not sidelined, it's deleted.
